Over the years it became a pagan tradition with its myths.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Candles\u00a0were lit up in the middle of winter in order to celebrate light when days were slowly becoming longer. What can be better than a round, warm and golden <\/span><em style=\"font-size: revert;\">cr\u00eape<\/em><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">\u00a0(pancake) looking like a sun to honour light?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: revert;\">Tradition<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">: Making <\/span><em style=\"font-size: revert;\">cr\u00eapes <\/em><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">is actually good fun: according to some old wife tails, one should just keep a coin, preferably a golden one, in his left hand, while the right hand is holding the pan (and yes there is a specific pan, <\/span><em style=\"font-size: revert;\">cr\u00eapi\u00e8re<\/em><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">), and tries to flip it in the air. If one succeeds in doing it nicely, without the <\/span><em style=\"font-size: revert;\">cr\u00eape<\/em><span style=\"font-size: revert;\"> landing on the floor or anywhere else in the kitchen, and if it comes nice and straight, back to the pan, he will be rich and prosperous the whole year.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Well, another tradition says that the first\u00a0<em>cr\u00eape\u00a0<\/em>should end up on the top of a cupboard\u00a0and stay there. It would then attract luck as long as it is there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Vocabulary:\u00a0<\/strong><em>chandelles et bougies<\/em><br \/>\nFrench uses two different words to name candles: <em>chandelles<\/em> and <em>bougies<\/em>.\u00a0<em>Chandelle<\/em>\u00a0has the same Latin origin as the English candles, <em>candela<\/em>. In the same word family, French, as well as English, also has<em> cand\u00e9labre<\/em> et <em>chandelier (<\/em>both for candle holder). But, more common is <em>bougie<\/em>\u00a0which finds its orgin in an arabic word <em>bugaya<\/em>, from <em>Bgayet<\/em>, name of an Algerian city (nowadays B\u00e9jaia) which was an important provider of candles from the XIVth century.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sayings<\/strong>: There are quite a few sayings around Candlemas. They usually concern either weather or food and wealth.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c0 la Chandeleur, l&rsquo;hiver cesse ou reprend vigueur.<br \/>\n<\/em>On Candlemas, winter ends or strengthens.<\/p>\n<p><em>Quand pour la Chandeleur le soleil est brillant, il fait plus froid apr\u00e8s qu&rsquo;avant.<\/em><br \/>\nEquivalent to:\u00a0If Candlemas Day be fair and bright, winter will have another fight.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c0 la Chandeleur, il faut manger la soupe dor\u00e9e pour avoir de l&rsquo;argent toute l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e.<br \/>\n<\/em>On Candlemas, one must eat the golden soup in order to have money all year round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recipe<\/strong>: How to make cr\u00eapes?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Ingredients\u00a0:<br \/>\n<\/u>200 g flour<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3 eggs<br \/>\n1\/2 l of milk<br \/>\n50 g butter (melted)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A pinch of salt<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">Butter for the baking dish.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Method\u00a0:<br \/>\n<\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mix flour and eggs together in a bowl. Gradually add milk and whisk until smooth. Finally add a pinch of salt and melted butter.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">Let this batter rest in the fridge for at least 30 minuts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">Preheat a flat pan (or a specific one, cr\u00eapi\u00e8re) and grease it with a bit of butter or a buttered kitchen towel. Pour a ladle full of batter and let it cook until golden.
